How it works
A home battery is a buffer between what your roof makes and when your household needs it.
It charges from your surplus
Once the house has taken what it needs, the excess charges the battery rather than being exported. Charging happens through the middle of the day when generation is highest.
It discharges when you get home
From late afternoon, the household draws from the battery instead of the grid. This is the window where cooking, cooling and lighting all stack up at once.
The grid covers what is left
If the battery empties overnight, supply reverts to the grid without you doing anything. Some setups can also charge from the grid on a cheaper tariff, if the tariff structure warrants it.
Backup runs a nominated circuit
If a backup circuit is fitted, selected loads keep running during an outage. This is a specific piece of wiring work, not something every battery does by default, and it is agreed before installation rather than assumed.

Will a battery keep my house running in a blackout?
Only if it is installed with a backup circuit, and only for the loads on that circuit. Without one, the system disconnects during an outage so that nobody working on the network is exposed to power from your roof. Tell us early if outage cover is a priority.
Can I add a battery to solar I already have?
Usually. It depends on your existing inverter: some can be paired with a battery directly, others need an additional unit or a hybrid replacement. We check what you have before quoting rather than assuming a retrofit is straightforward.
How long does a home battery last?
Batteries are warranted on a combination of years and energy throughput, so how hard you cycle it matters as much as its age.
How do I know what size to get?
Start with how much power the household uses after sunset, then look at how much surplus your roof genuinely produces to charge it. A battery bigger than your daily surplus will not fill, and one smaller than your evening load will not carry you through it.
Is a battery worth it in Perth?
It depends on your evening consumption, your current export rate and what you pay to buy power back. That is a calculation on your numbers, not a general answer, and we would rather run it with you than give you a slogan.
Where does the battery physically go?
Most units are wall mounted in a garage or on a shaded external wall, with clearance requirements and temperature limits set by the manufacturer. Perth summer heat is a real consideration, so placement gets checked on site.
