How it works
Four things happen between daylight hitting your roof and a smaller bill arriving.
Panels generate DC electricity
Daylight on the panels produces direct current. Output rises and falls with the sun's angle and with cloud, which is why orientation matters as much as panel count.
The inverter converts it to AC
Your house runs on alternating current, so an inverter sits between the array and your switchboard. It is the component that works hardest and it is the one worth spending on.
Your house uses it first
Anything running at the time draws from the panels before it draws from the grid. Self-consumption is where the value sits, which is why usage timing matters.
The surplus is exported
What you do not use flows back to the grid. In WA that is credited under the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme, which pays a different rate depending on the time of day you export.

Your cooling load lines up with your generation
Perth summers put air conditioning under load through the middle of the day, which is exactly when a rooftop array is producing hardest. Cooling is one of the few big household loads that naturally coincides with solar output.
WA pays differently for daytime and evening export
The Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme splits the day, and the evening rate is the higher one. That changes the maths on panel orientation, and it is the main reason a west-facing string is worth discussing rather than defaulting everything to north.
Small-scale technology certificates reduce the upfront cost
Solar installed in Perth falls in Zone 3 under the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. The certificates are usually assigned to the installer and taken off the invoice. The deeming period shortens each year, so the certificate count for the same system falls over time.
Coastal Perth is hard on hardware
Salt air west of the freeway and fine dust further inland both shorten the life of poorly chosen mounting hardware. Rail, fixings and cable management are specified for the location rather than picked as a default.

Residential Solar Systems questions
How big a system does my house actually need?
It comes from your consumption, not your roof area. We look at a recent Synergy bill, how the household runs through the day, and what is likely to change, such as a pool, an EV or someone moving to working from home. A system that is too large for your pattern exports most of what it makes at the lower daytime rate.
Will solar cover my air conditioning through summer?
Often a good share of it, because the heaviest cooling hours overlap with the strongest generation. Evening cooling after sunset still draws from the grid unless you add storage. We will be straight with you about which part of your load solar can and cannot reach.
What am I paid for the power I export?
Exports are credited under the WA Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme, which pays one rate during the day and a higher rate in the evening peak. Rates are set by the scheme rather than by us, so check the current published figures on the Synergy or WA Government site before you rely on them.
Do I have to arrange approval with Western Power or Synergy?
No, we handle the connection application as part of the job. Approval conditions can limit inverter size on some parts of the network, which is one of the things checked before a system is finalised rather than after.
What happens on a cloudy Perth winter day?
Output drops but does not stop. Winter production is lower across the board thanks to a lower sun angle and shorter days, and that seasonal swing is factored into sizing rather than being a surprise in July.
My roof is tile, or it faces the wrong way. Is it still worth it?
Usually yes. Tile is routine for an experienced installer. Orientation changes the shape of your generation curve rather than ruling it out, and in WA a westerly aspect can suit the buyback structure. A shaded roof is the case that genuinely needs assessing before anyone promises anything.
How long is the install and how disruptive is it?
Most residential installs are a single day on site, with a short power interruption while the switchboard work is done.
